Going to a Super Bowl Party?

by Joe on Feb.02, 2010, under Accessories

Buy some cheap wine and put a stocking on it!

If you bring a bottle of 1989 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon you will probably not need it but it still looks good.

The Art of Layering: Taking Inspiration from the French

by Joe on Jan.14, 2010, under Uncategorized

I thought this was fun!

My love affair with France began with my first walk through the streets of Paris: Notre Dame in the cold January night; the tip of the Eiffel Tower twinkling in the distance; and across the Seine, the Shakespeare and Company book shop, safe haven for English-speaking travelers who fancy themselves bohemian expatriates. And while I did all the cliché things an American student in Paris would do on this first extended stay in the country (namely, travel on the weekends and spend my weeknights in all the English, Irish, and Australian pubs the city had to offer), I still managed to take away a few decidedly French lessons. In the world of style, lesson number one was layering.

Now, my understanding of the finer points of layering remains rudimentary at best and doesn’t extend much further than throwing on a scarf or two and a cardigan. But, I’ve got a cached memory of many a French woman, who, if I may make a sweeping generalization, approach dressing in layers with a certain insouciance, balancing scarves, sweaters, jackets, and dresses in a way that makes it impossible to tell where one piece ends and the other begins. Everything just flows.

With more than a few weeks of winter left before the spring thaw begins, I’m drawing on that memory bank and dipping into casual essentials like cardigans and tights, jersey dresses and long-sleeve tees to layer my way to a slightly chicer cold-weather wardrobe. And I’m starting my experiment by cribbing this stylish Parisian’s ensemble. I’ll build the look off of a Susana Monaco dress, adding menswear oxfords, a Theory cardigan, and a Madewell scarf, and if I manage to divine a few more variations on this outfit, I may just come out on the other side of winter with my own brand of effortless style.
